The Problems

Despite the growing adoption of digital banking apps, users continue to encounter recurring pain points that undermine trust and satisfaction, the key challenges and solution include:

Understanding the Users

Before building BetaBank, I needed to step into the shoes of everyday Nigerians navigating the frustrations of digital banking.

I began with a Google Forms survey, reaching 50 participants from Lagos, Abuja, and Ibadan. For qualitative depth, I conducted interviews with selected participants in rural towns with patchy 2G connections, uncovering insights that numbers alone could not reveal.

Using Likert scale questions, I measured how often they faced failed transfers, how much data banking apps consumed, and how satisfied they were with dispute resolution. The results were telling: frustration was the norm, not the exception.

From these findings, I developed three user personas that guided every design decision.

Evaluating Business Goals and Impacts

BetaBank was designed to serve a market where 60% of users rely on 2G or 3G networks and where financial literacy gaps remain a major barrier to adoption.

Competitor and SWOT analysis revealed a clear competitive edge in deep market localization, while financial projections mapped a realistic path to break even in 3 to 4 years with 100,000 active users.

The impact is tangible: higher retention through localized support, stronger user trust via proactive dispute resolution, and a defensible advantage against global players lacking local depth.

Betabank tackled real user challenges with practical and inclusive design solutions. Its features not only earned user trust but also increased engagement and demonstrated strong business potential. In just two weeks of testing with 150 users:

• 89% reported smoother, faster transactions even on low data and poor network
• 84% successfully resolved disputes through the in-app complaint system in under 10 minutes
• 72% interacted with the AI Finance Coach
• 67% set at least one personalized savings goal
• 92% appreciated the use of local languages and the app’s simple, relatable interface

These results reflect a thoughtful approach rooted in local realities and user needs. Betabank didn’t just digitize banking, it made it more human. The project serves as a blueprint for building fintech products that are accessible, trustworthy, and genuinely empowering for everyday Nigerians.
